Changes
Our ‘Writing Fiction’ classes begin again in January 2026. Now in their 25th consecutive year, we are making changes to the style and structure so that writers get even better feedback on their work. Now we’ll have more room for debate and discussion of literary techniques and the processes of writing. And we’ll write in each class.
Online
Every new term brings returning writers, as well as those attending for the first time. New people are often interested in how the online format might work. I can say that we endeavour to run the online classes as much like in-person classes as possible, while also taking advantage of the benefits that the online format brings, such as convenience. The format also has the added bonus of reaching writers around the world. We create a community that pushes every one of us to produce their best possible work in a non-pressured way. If you think that ‘online’ might not be an immersive experience, I believe you’ll be happily surprised by how interactive these groups are.
Quality
It can be hard to gauge the quality of a creative writing class from the outside and it’s true there are a lot of substandard classes out there. The good news is that quality is at the centre of everything thi wurd does, from our books and magazines, to our collaborations, editing and live events. Our classes are the result of a long engagement with writing, publishing, teaching and editing. For 20 years, I worked at Glasgow University, teaching creative writing and literature, and it was there that the ‘Writing Fiction’ classes began in October 2001. They are continually being refined to offer as much knowledge and support as possible. The aim is always to help writers produce better work and to write more. Since 2020 they’ve been presented as part of thi wurd. These classes have been an influential part of many literary scenes. Our groups are multi-generational and everyone is welcome.
If anyone wants to discuss the nature of the sessions and the content before signing up, feel free to drop me an email.
Value
I’m inspired by those who try to make access to the arts affordable. The classes are offered at around half the price of what might be charged if I ran them through a University or other organisation. I want to avoid excluding people economically, as inclusion results in more interesting and diverse groups.
Each class runs for two months and involves 20 hours of class time at the cost of £140. That is a mere £7 per hour. Plus there are the optional homework tasks that lead to more writing and more value. I think it’s why so many people return.
More Details
Our classes run on Tues, Wed and Thur evenings (GMT). Please check our CLASSES PAGE for more details and booking information, or drop me an email. See you in January 2026 for our new format.
