‘Show don’t tell’ is excellent advice for fiction writers. However, the ability to ‘tell’ is also of great importance. This day school will begin by defining ‘told narration’, then focus on ways to blend telling and showing. We will experiment with writing more sophisticated narration.

During the class, we’ll examine extracts of published fiction and discuss elements such as dynamic detail, reported speech, exposition, movement, time shifts, perspective, description, subjective/objective narration and more.

Short writing tasks will be undertaken in class and everyone will leave with a deeper understanding of how successful narration is constructed through an artful combination of ‘telling’ and ‘showing’. The knowledge will be useful for writing fiction and for editing fiction. It will also make us better readers.

This class is suitable for writers and readers who have an interest in how narration works in fiction.

(For people who can’t make the in-person class in Glasgow, there is also an online version, taking place on Sat 14 December 1.30-5.30pm (GMT). To book the online class, please see our shop page here.)

The in-person day school will be held in an accessible location in the west end of Glasgow, confirmed once the place is booked. For more information, please email editor@thi-wurd.com.
