On Fri 23rd August 2024, at The Glad Cafe in Glasgow, we’re putting on a second and final literary night to celebrate our latest publication ‘Earthly Rewards’. But what will happen at this ‘literary event’? It was a question some of our team were asked recently while putting up promotional posters around Glasgow. So, in case you don’t know, here’s who we are, and roughly what to expect on Fri 23 Aug at The Glad Cafe.

Who We Are

thi wurd is a Glasgow-based independent publisher. We also run fiction writing classes and literary events. We have never received funding and therefore depend upon sales of books, magazines, tickets, etc, to keep going. Over the years we’ve built up a loyal audience in Scotland, the UK, and internationally. Along the way, we’ve published an exciting and varied body of literary and artistic work.

At The Glad Cafe, 23 Aug

Doors open at 6.30pm. We’ll kick off at 7pm with music and some visuals. Readings begin at 7.30pm prompt. It’s a smaller venue than we usually play (this time seated) therefore do come early to grab a drink and get a good spot. In addition to readings of fiction and poetry from ‘Earthly Rewards’, we’ll present completely new works of fiction and poetry. There’ll be excellent short set of live music from a brilliant band, curated playlists and talks. At the midway point we’ll have a decent break to allow people to meet each other and interact with thi wurd’s community,. It will also be a chance to get a drink and browse our books, magazines, tote bags and other items on the stall.

On 23 Aug, we’ll have amazing readers. You’ll hear powerful literary works that involve being taken into narratives, stories and poems. Usually the work that is read exists very strongly on the page – perhaps in one of our books or magazines, or possibly written specially for the night – but here is a chance to hear the work performed aloud. The very best readers allow us to feel strong emotions. Listeners get to identify with characters, situations, dilemmas and conflicts in the very moment of narration. It’s live art.

On the night, we’ll unveil our next project and explain how writers and artists can be involved. This will be a really exciting part of the event as it marks the beginning of a new phase for thi wurd.

Events by thi wurd are friendly: everyone is included. There’s no hierarchy. I hope it has the feel of a gig, but it isn’t about creating a scene. It’s just about creating an exciting platform to present writing, music and art. And we always have a wide and varied crowd: a supportive, multi-generational audience, which is very important.

The Glad Cafe show will finish around 10pm, with the bar staying open till 11pm, so that people can stay, listen to our playlists and chat. My hope is the audience leaves having heard memorable and immersive fiction and poetry, wonderful live music. And hopefully everyone will have spent the night in an atmosphere that inspires their own creativity.
