This online day school is open to writers anywhere in the world and aimed at those who want to create better narrative structures in their writing. It is also ideal for readers who want to understand more about how narration functions.
We’ll look at a range of short stories and novel extracts, focusing specifically on how writers construct narratives to tell stories. The importance of detail, movement, the role of the narrator, setting, characterisation and narrative arc will be discussed. Throughout the day, perspective and point of view will be emphasised and examined as key components of narration.
Everyone will go away with a clearer and deeper knowledge of how successful narration works. Writers will be able to use narrative techniques more effectively in their work. Additionally, the session will contain helpful information and guidance for those editing their own work, or the work of others.
During the first part of the day, participants will write short pieces inspired by the fiction we’ve read. In the second half we’ll work on openings and outlines of longer stories. These can be continued after the session.
A 30-minute break will take place halfway through, as well as a couple of other short breaks.
All readers and writers are welcome. This class is suitable for beginners all the way through to experienced writers. No prior knowledge of literary terms is required. If anyone has any questions about this day school, please just drop an email to: editor@thi-wurd.com
