I quickly wrote down a list of some of the reasons why a fiction writer might want to take one of our excellent online classes.
- The classes are informal, friendly spaces. Spaces where writers can do great work.
- The prices are kept as low as possible to provide excellent value.
- Writers create new work that they wouldn’t have written otherwise. The classes motivate and inspire new fiction.
- Typically, people write more while attending the classes.
- Writers develop their craft during the sessions.
- All writers receive quality, constructive feedback that shines a light on their work and helps them improve their fiction.
- It’s all about support. Being part of these classes, which are limited to 16 participants, is being part of a writing community that is truly supportive.
- The classes have run since 2001 and have been built, refined and honed over many years to create the best possible experiences for everyone taking part.
- As a group we learn more about the techniques of storytelling. We learn about the structures of short stories and novels.
- The classes are suitable for beginners, experienced writers and for published authors.
- Over the years, work from the classes has been published in journals, magazines and in book form.
- We create democratic spaces where everyone’s voice is equal. This process isn’t about ‘teaching’ people to write. It’s about a space where writers feel inspired to create.
- The classes are a place to meet and talk with writers from around the world.
- The groups feature participants from Scotland, the UK, mainland Europe, the USA and beyond. This international aspect influences work in a positive way and we receive feedback from many different perspectives.
- We gain a deeper understanding of the major elements of fiction, such as voice, characterisation, dialogue, narration, setting, detail, movement, etc.
- As well as becoming better writers, we become better readers, more critically aware of the techniques and possibilities of prose fiction.
- Giving feedback to others allows writers to find the distance to apply criticism to their own work. In this process, writers become more objective in relation to their own writing.
- Prompts and writing tasks are used to inspire new work. Over the years these prompts have resulted in published fiction.
- thi wurd is a publisher with many years of experience in running creative writing groups. That experience shows through in the quality of what is delivered.
- In the January 2025 term, we will embark as a group on a project that will lead to publications and events (this will be outlined during the first session). Join us if you can. All writers, wherever they are in the world, are very welcome.
